Ocean Journey Exhibit

An ocean of change to McWane’s aquarium!

The highlight of many visits to McWane Science Center is a stop by the Deep Discovery area in the aquarium. It is home to favorites like the green Moray eel, the moon jellyfish, clownfish and more. This area is dedicated to salt water environments from around the world featuring some of the most amazing creatures in the ocean.

Now, the experience will only get better. After nearly 13 years since it was created, the popular Deep Discovery area has received a much-needed makeover. The area has been renovated to include updated tanks, new lighting, and an overall new look. This area has been renamed “Ocean Journey." Guests will enjoy learning more about the fish in the tanks. The new graphics will identify and describe all of the animals. They will also describe the different ecosystems represented by the different salt water tanks.

The aquarium will welcome spectacular new additions including dwarf cuttlefish. They will be a particularly exciting addition to the aquarium because they are very intelligent, unusual, and exciting to see in person as they dart quickly around their tanks. These amazing creatures, also known as Sepia bandensis, are cephalopods, related to octopus, squid and nautilus. Sepia bandensis have 8 arms, two feeding tentacles, three hearts, a ring shaped brain, a cuttle bone that helps control buoyancy, a fin that girds their mantle for fine maneuvering, a funnel that gives them 'jet' propulsion, superb 360 degree vision, copper based blood and the ability to squirt ink. They lay clusters of ink-covered eggs that resemble clusters of grapes. When the hatchlings are born they are tiny, less than a ¼ inch long, but can grow to an inch long within 2 months, and to about 4 inches within 6 months. Guests will surely enjoy meeting these amazing new members of the aquarium.

Funding for the new Deep Discovery area was provided by Birmingham Coca-Cola Bottling Company.

Whitehaven Sauvignon Blanc
Classic New Zealand style, with bright, fresh pink grapefruit on the nose mellowed by a hint of gooseberry on the palate and a crisp finish.

Oberbergen Pinot Noir

This pinot is light, with ripe red strawberry flavors and very soft tannins.

Mumm Napa Brut Rose

This sparkling rose is mostly pinot noir grapes, and the ripe red fruit of the pinot variety are definitely present along with the nutty, yeasty flavors of a great sparkling wine made in the Champagne method.

City Action Partnership

CAP is noticing more car break-ins than usual downtown.  Almost all have one thing in common—items left in sight.  The items range from GP systems to a pack of cigarettes.  It only takes a few seconds to break into a car and ruin your day.  Please take a moment to secure your valuables in the trunk or out of view.
Items in sight—thieves’ delight.

Services CAP provides:
  • Street security patrol
  • Security escorts to and from your vehicle
  • Friendly advice and directions
  • Graffiti removal
  • Outside supplemental cleanup
  • Stranded motorist assistance:
  • Dead battery
  • Out of gas
  • Lockout
  • Flat tire

See the CAP Service Area HERE

CAP is examining the feasibility of expanding its service area to include the loft district, but they need your help to accomplish this goal. If you live downtown, visit this link for more information and sign-up for coverage from CAP.

At Adeptio, we've put together a facility where many aspects of wellness can be achieved all in one place. Our initial membership offerings allowed one price for full access to all areas. For some, this is a great value; however, others may be seeking only to utilize one or two specific areas.

We are now offering three levels of membership: Red (basic access to strength/cardio equipment and locker rooms), White (includes unlimited group classes), and Blue (all-inclusive + CrossFit).

We have Zumba class offerings - Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:30PM. Martina Winston (HR Partner at Regions Bank) leads this high-energy class and is building quite a following! Come and check out one class at a drop-in rate of only $7!

Please post this at your office, pass along to co-workers and friends, and come by for a tour. We're open Monday - Friday, 5AM - 7PM and Saturday from 8AM - 2PM.

Also, visit our website for more information and group class schedules www.adeptiowellness.com

Hope to see you soon!

Folk Art Rotation

The second of three installations planned this year for the Folk Art Gallery is open.
Explore the works of celebrated artists like Chris Clark, Sybil Gibson,
Purvis Young, Charlie Lucas, and Thornton Dial.
The gallery encompasses works that have been called outsider, naive, primitive, visionary, and self-taught.
All of the works demonstrate how creativity and artistic talent have no set path and know no bounds.
